Monitoring of water reservoirs and controlling fire extinguishing water valves in rural regions

Challenge

Monitoring the levels in fire extinguishing water reservoirs and controlling the extinguishing valves would be too complicated and expensive in rural regions where greater distances have to be covered using a rented fiber-optic or copper cable connection.

Solution

Expensive fiber-optic cables or rented lines for monitoring and controlling are no longer required. The digital solution using LoRa offers a flexible, cost-effective and low-maintenance method for monitoring fill levels and controlling the fire extinguishing water valves.

Grisons Building Department

Monitoring room occupancy and service on demand

Challenge

Room conditions such as brightness, presence, temperature, CO2 and humidity, e.g. in meeting rooms, are to be monitored. The current process for maintaining the room setup is complex and inflexible.

Solution

Wireless IoT motion sensors detect room occupancy and utilization. Service orders for maintaining coffee machines, printers, etc. can be triggered at the push of an IoT button.

Visualization of building management systems

Challenge

The data and processes of the building management system (Aprol) should also be displayed on panels and tablets in addition to control cabinets. For a simple overview of relevant systems and for emergency operation of the DDCs in the event of a management level failure.

Solution

Eliona is operated as a private cloud solution in the company’s own data center. Eliona accesses the management system and the DDCs via interfaces (OPC UA, IOSYS) and displays the collected data on a web interface. In user role-specific dashboards, staff members are provided with data evaluations, operating states and emergency operation functions without them actually needing access to the management system.

Basel University Hospital

Monitoring and managing room conditions/occupancy

Challenge

Temperature, CO2, humidity, brightness in meeting rooms, offices and patient rooms are unclear. Room management is complex and inflexible.

Solution

Mounting wireless IoT sensors for monitoring room conditions. Wireless motion sensor monitors room occupancy.

Utility of the Canton of Zurich (EKZ)

Connecting the building management system to Eliona

Challenge

Energy contractors have PV system data of consumers and energy consumption in their building management system (e.g. WinCC OA, Aprol). However, the data cannot be made available to the prosumers (producers and consumers).

Solution

Connecting the building management system to Eliona. Transparent itemization of production and consumption data (heat and electricity) for prosumers.

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)

Connecting building management systems with IoT sensor data in Eliona

Challenge

Measuring data from LoRa sensors in equipment rooms that previously flowed into Apache Kafka cannot be transferred to the local building management system as there is no interface.

Solution

Eliona acts as a message broker between Apache Kafka and the building management system. Both systems access the same data (OPC UA) normalized by Eliona.

Automated monitoring of waste water traps

Challenge

Dozens of waste traps that are installed in a multi-story underground car park are checked weekly by an employee for blockages and the fill levels are recorded. This process is time consuming and expensive.

Solution

Retrofit sensors measure the fill level of the waste traps and transfer the respective data to Eliona using LoRa radio technology. If the fill level is too high, push alarms are triggered.

SwissLife commercial building

Predictive maintenance

Challenge

Irregularities when operating heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems in commercial buildings are not detected. This results in malfunctioning of the systems and high costs.

Solution

Retrofit IoT sensors on all building systems measure operational indicators such as operation, performance and energy consumption. The data are evaluated in Eliona. Predictions about necessary maintenance are generated automatically. This prevents downtime and increases the economic efficiency of the systems. The service technician photographs the QR code on the system and then has immediate access to the latest version of the system documentation. Maintenance activities and notes can be viewed and recorded.

Care facility Cadonau

Monitoring cooling temperatures

Challenge

The temperature in medical refrigerators is not monitored. Forgetting to close them may result in drugs losing their efficacy.

Solution

Wireless sensors monitor the storage conditions inside the refrigerator. Any deviations (temperature too low or too high) are reported to service staff.
